Urbandale, Iowa – Luke Alexey Welch, a 26-year-old resident of Urbandale, passed away on August 12, 2024, leaving behind a legacy of love, dedication, and vibrant spirit. Born on May 26, 1998, in Petrozavodsk, Russia, Luke’s life was a testament to the profound impact of family and community.
Luke’s journey to the United States began in 2006 when he participated in Camp Hope, a program aimed at providing older, adoptable children from around the world with life-changing experiences in the U.S. During his time at the camp, he was hosted by Dick and Sharon Jones, where he met Jennifer and Eric Welch. Captivated by his warmth and enthusiasm, they made the decision to adopt him, welcoming him into their family on December 2, 2006. Luke’s arrival in America marked the beginning of a new chapter in his life as a beloved son and brother.
In Urbandale, Luke attended Woodward-Granger schools and quickly became an active participant in sports. He graduated in 2017 and pursued a career in the tool and die industry. Luke’s dedication to his craft led him to Des Moines Area Community College (DMACC), where he was accepted into their program. He worked as a machinist at Accumold in Ankeny for seven years, earning the respect and admiration of his colleagues for his skill and enthusiasm.
Beyond his professional achievements, Luke was known for his love of the outdoors and his diverse hobbies. Whether it was boating, swimming, snowboarding, or mini-golfing with his family, he approached every activity with joy and passion. His annual fall deer hunting trips with his dad and uncle Jason were particularly cherished. Luke also shared a special bond with his two dogs, Ozzy and Sage, and treasured the time spent with his cousins and grandparents, especially during family trips to destinations like Disney World.
Luke is survived by his parents, Eric and Jennifer Welch; his sister, Jozy Murry, and her husband, Ben; and his grandparents, Carroll and Eileen McLuckie and Colleen Welch. He is also remembered by his nephew, Joshua Murry, uncles, aunts, and numerous cousins. His grandfather, Gary Welch, preceded him in death.
