Mary Ellen Schuler, a respected and beloved former kindergarten teacher at Our Lady of Good Counsel (OLGC) and a lifelong resident of Pennsylvania, passed away peacefully on August 6, 2024, at the age of 80. She was surrounded by her loving family at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania after a brief illness.
Mary Ellen, born Mary Ellen Connolly, dedicated 40 years of her life to early childhood education, primarily within the Archdiocese of Philadelphia. Her teaching career spanned multiple schools, including Queen of the Universe, St. Michael the Archangel, and Our Lady of Good Counsel, where she left an indelible mark on countless young lives. She was also an administrator at Gwynedd Mercy Academy and an instructor at Holy Family University, reflecting her deep commitment to education.
Beyond the classroom, Mary Ellen was actively involved in her church community, serving in various roles such as PREP teacher, RCIA sponsor, CYO advisor, lector, and Eucharistic Minister. Her dedication to her faith and community was evident in all aspects of her life.
Her passing has prompted an outpouring of grief and tributes from those who knew her. The OLGC Alumni Association shared their condolences on Facebook, stating, "It is with great sadness that we share the news of the passing of Mary Ellen Schuler, beloved former kindergarten teacher at OLGC. Please keep her family in your prayers."
Others who knew her shared their thoughts on social media. Dimitria Gangi Liddy wrote, "Love Mrs. Schuler, God rest her beautiful soul." Theresa Opalka Boorse added, "Great teacher! A life well lived!" Aimee Lackey Albin also remembered her fondly, stating, "Wonderful sweet lady. All of my children had Mrs. Hall, but Mrs. Schuler was such a big presence during their kindergarten experience."
Mary Ellen’s life was also deeply enriched by her family, with whom she shared annual vacations in Cape May and a love for baking, gardening, and crafting. She is survived by her husband, Joseph F. Schuler, her three children, Rosemarie, Joseph A., and Thomas R., and her cherished grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, August 16, 2024, at Our Lady of Grace Church in Penndel, Pennsylvania. The family has requested that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to a charity close to your heart in memory of Mary Ellen’s legacy of compassion and service.
