Melody Burns, Former Radio Host and Veterans Advocate, Passes Away in Colonie, New York After Long Battle with Cancer

Melody Burns, a beloved former local radio host and a tireless advocate for veterans, has passed away in Colonie, New York, after a prolonged battle with cancer. Burns was widely recognized for her impactful work in the community, particularly in her role as the director of operations at the Veterans Miracle Center (VMC), where she dedicated herself to supporting veterans and military personnel.

Burns’ legacy is marked by her unwavering commitment to service. She was known for her involvement in organizing rallies, including those against the state’s SAFE Act and in support of law enforcement, reflecting her dedication to causes she believed in deeply. Her efforts in the veterans’ community were particularly notable. Under her leadership, the VMC provided essential resources to veterans, ensuring they had access to new products at no cost, a service that Burns continued even as she battled her illness.

Her impact was not only felt in her professional endeavors but also in her personal life. Burns was a private individual who courageously shared her journey with cancer on her personal Facebook page, offering candid insights into her struggles and triumphs. Her experience with cancer became deeply personal when her husband, Victor Olivett, was diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer. Burns documented his final months, and after his passing in 2019, she continued to advocate for early cancer screenings.

Burns’ contributions were widely recognized, earning her the title of Albany County Citizen of the Month in 2016. Her community efforts extended beyond the VMC, including organizing a holiday card campaign for troops that resulted in the distribution of 150,000 cards in 2015.

Her passing has left a profound impact on those who knew her. Many have taken to Facebook to express their condolences and share memories of Burns. Michelle V-Straight, a close friend, wrote, "I am deeply saddened to hear of the passing of a true hero, Melody Burns. A blessing to all who came in contact with her."

Burns’ work and spirit will be remembered by many, especially within the veterans’ community, where her contributions have left a lasting legacy. Her passing marks the loss of a passionate advocate, a dedicated friend, and a cherished member of the Colonie community.
