Michael Gaynor, Esteemed Villanova University Executive Director of Undergraduate Admissions, Passes Away After Battle with Urothelial Carcinoma

Villanova, Pennsylvania – The Villanova University community is mourning the loss of Michael Gaynor, a beloved educator, mentor, and leader, who passed away on Saturday, August 10, 2024. Gaynor, who served as the Executive Director of Undergraduate Admissions at Villanova for 24 of his 42 years at the institution, left a profound impact on countless students and colleagues throughout his remarkable career.

Michael Gaynor was diagnosed with stage 4 urothelial carcinoma after being admitted to the hospital on June 3, 2024. Despite receiving hospice care beginning on July 30, 2024, his passing has left a deep void in the hearts of those who knew him. Gaynor’s dedication to Villanova and his unwavering support for students and families have made him a cherished figure in the university community.

The news of Gaynor’s passing has prompted an outpouring of grief and tributes on social media. Juan Camilo Tamayo, a colleague, expressed his sorrow on Facebook, saying, "It is with heavy hearts and profound sadness that we share the loss of our dear friend, colleague, mentor, husband, and father Michael Gaynor. His absence, wisdom, and unwavering support will be deeply felt."

Jim Sullivan described Gaynor as "the kindest, nicest man ever," while Lou Greenwald shared, "Sad to hear this news. Michael was a wonderful person and great friend. My thoughts and prayers are with his family." John Eriksen, another colleague, fondly recalled their shared love for Philadelphia sports, stating, "Michael was an amazing colleague and someone I just loved seeing. We could chat endlessly about Philly sports and Philly sports history."

Gaynor’s influence extended far beyond Villanova. His work in college admissions, particularly in international recruitment, was transformative, and he was regarded as a pillar in the field. His colleagues and friends frequently described him as embodying the core values of Villanova—Veritas, Unitas, and Caritas—making him the epitome of the university to many.

In the wake of his passing, friends of Michael Gaynor have created a GoFundMe page to support his family with funeral costs and other expenses during this challenging time. Gaynor leaves behind his wife, Debbie, his daughter, Anna, and his two sons, Nick and Christian, who were born with cerebral palsy and require ongoing care.

The Villanova community and all who knew Michael Gaynor are encouraged to keep his family in their thoughts and prayers as they navigate this difficult period. Funeral plans and an obituary will be announced at a later date.
