Muscle Shoals Mourns the Loss of Radio Icon Dwight Kevin Self, a Pillar of the Community

Muscle Shoals, Alabama – The Muscle Shoals community is reeling from the unexpected loss of Dwight Kevin Self, a beloved local radio icon, who passed away suddenly at the age of 64 on Saturday, August 10, 2024. Known for his legendary voice and deep connection to the community, Kevin Self’s passing has left a significant void.

Visitation for Kevin Self will be held on Wednesday, August 14, from 12 p.m. to 2 p.m. at Redemption Shoals Church, followed by a funeral service at the same location. He will be laid to rest at Colbert Memorial Gardens.

Kevin Self was a prominent figure in Muscle Shoals, a city in Colbert County, Alabama, with a rich history and a close-knit community. His contributions to local radio and his active involvement in various community events made him a well-respected and cherished individual.

Tributes have poured in on social media, reflecting the widespread impact Kevin had on those who knew him. Chad Holden, in a heartfelt Facebook post, shared, “I sure hated to hear the news about our friend and MSCS-supporter Kevin Self. He was a class act, and super talented. He served as emcee at numerous school functions, including the Rachel Wammack benefit concert for the band last May. His kids came through our school system and are making their mark in college and a career now. We offer our sincere condolences to the family and will always have fond memories of Kevin and that awesome voice of his.”

Kevin Johnson, another member of the community, expressed his sorrow, saying, “Is this the WLAY radio Kevin Self?” To which Terri Leigh Willingham responded, “Yes.” Johnson then added, “Dang, hate to hear that.”

Michelle Hubbard Higgins also shared her thoughts, posting, “Praying for all of his family and friends.” Similar sentiments were echoed by Mike Pam Keenum, who wrote, “Prayers for all hurting,” and Patsy Odell Peebles, who added, “Praying for the family.”

Kevin Self’s legacy as a radio icon and community leader will be remembered by many. His voice, once a staple on the airwaves, will now be a cherished memory for the people of Muscle Shoals, as they come together to honor the life of a man who gave so much to his community.
