A tragic helicopter crash has claimed the lives of Pete and Sue Hansel, a newlywed couple from Hawaii, while they were honeymooning at the Great Barrier Reef. The accident occurred near the Whitsunday Islands, abruptly ending what was meant to be a memorable and joyous trip for the couple.
Pete Hansel, 79, and his wife, Sue Hansel, 65, had been married for just three months. Described by friends as joyful and affectionate, the couple had eagerly anticipated this special trip, often discussing their excitement before their departure.
The Hansels were on board an Airbus H120 helicopter when it crashed into the waters off the Whitsunday Islands. The cause of the crash remains undetermined, and the helicopter company involved has temporarily ceased operations pending a review. The Australian Transport Safety Bureau has indicated that they may not require the wreckage for their investigation, potentially delaying its recovery by several weeks.
Also on board the helicopter were Mrs. Hansel’s daughter and her partner, both of whom survived the crash and are currently assisting with the investigation. They have requested privacy as they navigate this difficult time and remain on Hamilton Island for further discussions with air safety investigators.
The couple’s honeymoon was supposed to be an 11-day trip, with their return to Hawaii scheduled for this Saturday. Their sudden loss has left friends and family in deep mourning, as the trip, which was meant to celebrate their new life together, ended in such tragedy.
