Oakland, California – The Oakland Fire Department and the broader community are mourning the loss of retired Engineer Richard Logan, who passed away at the age of 81 on Friday, August 9, 2024. Logan died peacefully at his home, with his wife of 55 years by his side. His passing marks the end of a remarkable career and a life dedicated to service, mentorship, and advocacy for equality.
Richard Logan began his distinguished career with the Oakland Fire Department in 1974, starting as a firefighter assigned to Station 20 on the "A" shift. His commitment and skill quickly earned him promotions, first to engineer in 1977 and then to chief operator in 1978. In this role, he was responsible for managing Battalion 2, working closely with the 1st Assistant Chief to oversee operations across all six battalions. However, due to budget cuts, the position of chief operator was eliminated, and Logan returned to his role as an engineer, where he served out of Station 25 until his retirement on December 29, 2001.
Beyond his technical contributions, Logan was a prominent figure within the Oakland Black Firefighters Association (OBFFA), where he served as president for many years. He was a strong advocate for racial and gender equality within the department and dedicated much of his life to improving educational opportunities and living conditions for Oakland communities through careers in the fire service.
One of Logan’s lasting legacies is his dedication to training future generations of firefighters. He led the "Thursday Night Firefighter Preparation Class," a program that prepared countless individuals for careers in the fire service. Many firefighters across the nation attribute their success to the training and guidance provided by Logan through these OBFFA-sponsored courses.
The Oakland Fire Department will honor Richard Logan by raising the relief banner at all stations until Sunday, August 18, 2024.
