Cedar Grove, Georgia – A domestic disturbance in Cedar Grove escalated tragically on Thursday, resulting in the death of 31-year-old Curtis “CJ” Glen Purvis Jr. from McRae-Helena. The incident, which culminated in an officer-involved shooting, has left the local community in shock.
Laurens County deputies initially responded to reports of a domestic dispute at a residence in Cedar Grove. Upon their arrival, Curtis Purvis Jr., the suspect in the disturbance, had already fled the scene. However, witnesses reported that he soon returned, driving aggressively toward a group of individuals gathered outside the home. Purvis allegedly crashed into a parked vehicle before forcing his way inside the house.
Once inside, Purvis reportedly brandished a weapon and assaulted several people. The situation rapidly escalated, leading the responding deputy to use deadly force in an attempt to neutralize the threat. Purvis was fatally shot during the encounter. The individuals assaulted by Purvis were taken to a nearby hospital, though their current conditions remain unknown.
Following the incident, Sheriff Larry Dean requested the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) to conduct an independent investigation, a standard procedure in cases involving officer-involved shootings in Georgia. The deputy involved has been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.
The Cedar Grove community is grappling with the aftermath of this tragic event, as residents await further details from the GBI’s investigation. The findings will be critical in determining whether the deputy’s actions were justified during the volatile situation. As the investigation continues, the community remains on edge, hoping for clarity and understanding in the wake of this tragedy.
