Oman Mourns the Loss of Sheikh Abdul Aziz Bin Mohammed Al Rawas, Former Adviser to Sultan Qaboos

Salalah, Oman – Sheikh Abdul Aziz bin Mohammed Al Rawas, a revered figure in Oman and the former adviser for Cultural Affairs to the late His Majesty Sultan Qaboos, passed away on Sunday, August 18, 2024, at the age of 79. His death marks the end of an era of profound cultural and intellectual influence in the Sultanate.

Born in the Wilayat of Salalah in the Dhofar Governorate, Sheikh Al Rawas was a lifelong advocate for the enrichment of Oman’s cultural heritage. His career began with his role as the Minister of Information and Youth Affairs from 1979 to 1982, and he later served as the Minister of Information until 2001. During his tenure, he played a crucial role in shaping Oman’s media landscape, leaving a lasting legacy.

In addition to his ministerial roles, Sheikh Al Rawas was appointed as the adviser for Cultural Affairs to His Majesty Sultan Qaboos bin Said, a position he continued under His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tarik until his retirement in April 2020. His dedication to the nation’s intellectual and cultural development was unwavering throughout his life.

The news of his passing has resonated deeply within the community. Social media has been flooded with tributes, reflecting the widespread respect and admiration for Sheikh Al Rawas. Anbukumar Rajendran commented, "Rest in peace," while Ronnie Mathias added, "May his soul rest in eternal peace."
