Calgary, Alberta – Patrick Kimmel was killed following a lengthy standoff with police in southeast Calgary, which began last Thursday and stretched over 30 hours, concluding Friday evening.
The standoff initiated when officers attempted to execute a search warrant at a residence on Penswood Way S.E. Shots were fired at the officers, prompting an escalated response. Despite efforts to negotiate, Kimmel responded by firing from inside the house, leading to a significant exchange of gunfire.
Law enforcement, including the Calgary tactical unit and the RCMP emergency response team, were involved in the confrontation, which saw over 100 rounds discharged. The situation was described by Calgary Police Chief Mark Neufeld as "tremendously dynamic," citing Kimmel’s history of weapons offenses as a major risk factor to the community and officers involved.
Throughout the ordeal, no officers or bystanders were harmed, a relief to the local community. Memorial Drive was closed between 52nd and 68th Streets S.E., and residents of the nearby Penbrooke Meadows neighborhood were advised to shelter in place until it was safe to return.
The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) has launched an investigation into the officer-involved shooting to ensure all actions taken were in accordance with legal and procedural standards.
