Quilting Community Mourns the Loss of Sarah Bond, Renowned Quilter and Teacher, After a 6-Year Battle with Cancer

Sarah Bond, a celebrated quilter and inspiring teacher, passed away after a prolonged battle with metastatic breast cancer. The news of her death on Thursday, August 23, 2024, has sent waves of sorrow through the quilting community and beyond.

Bond was known not only for her exceptional skill in quilt composition and design but also for her generous spirit. Her quilts, known for their intricate and unique designs, have inspired countless students and admirers. She leaves behind a legacy filled with beautiful, original quilts that reflect her deep connection to her craft and her ancestors.

Throughout her career, Bond was a guiding light in the quilting world. Her ability to transform traditional quilt blocks into innovative designs earned her widespread respect and admiration. Many who had the privilege of working with her regarded her as a mentor and a beacon of creativity in the quilting community.

Harvey Fierstein expressed his sorrow on Facebook, writing, "Sad news – Brilliant quilter and inspiring teacher, Sarah Bond, lost her 6-year battle with breast cancer today. She leaves behind trunkfuls of magnificent original quilts and countless grateful students. I join with them sending love to Sarah’s family and friends. Terribly sorry for your loss. Our loss."

Other heartfelt condolences poured in as well. Katy Tessler Braun simply wrote, "Bless her sweet soul," while Kathy Robinson Gielow added, "I am so sorry for everyone mourning her loss."

Sheri Weiss, addressing Fierstein, shared, "So sorry you lost your friend Harvey. May her memories bring you joy. I am waiting to see the quilt memorial you make in her honor, as I know it will be super special."

Sarah Bond’s influence extended far beyond her quilting, touching the hearts of everyone who had the chance to learn from her or see her work. As the quilting community and her loved ones grieve, her memory will live on through the quilts she created and the many lives she touched.

Funeral arrangements and an official obituary will be released by Sarah Bond’s family in the coming days.
