Renowned Bassist and Songwriter Billy Swann of Orangeburg, SC, Passes Away

Orangeburg, South Carolina – Billy Swann, a well-known bassist and songwriter from Orangeburg, SC, has passed away, leaving a significant void in the music community. Swann, a member of the influential band The Muffins, died early this morning, as confirmed by a heartfelt statement on social media: “It is with great sadness that I have to report that our dear Muffin brother, Billy Swann, passed away early this morning. The world is not going to be the same.”

Billy Swann spent his formative years in Washington, DC, after his family relocated there in the 1950s. He attended high school in McLean, Virginia, and soon after began pursuing his passion for music. Swann became a central figure in the DC music scene, eventually forming The Muffins in 1973 with Dave Newhouse and Michael Zentner. The band, known for its unique sound and influential albums, disbanded in 1981, but not before leaving a lasting impact on the music world.

In 1991, Swann moved to Orangeburg, South Carolina, where he continued to share his musical talents with various bands, including The Abilenes, Siberian Mine Blast, and Fender Benders. His influence extended beyond his music; he was a dedicated father and a cherished grandfather, leaving behind a legacy of love and inspiration.

Tributes have poured in on social media from those who knew and admired Swann. Steve Feigenbaum expressed his sorrow, saying, "Very sorry to hear that Billy Swann died this morning and very glad that he’s left his pain behind. What a great, intuitive musician and what a mature and responsible soul." Jon D. Brayton shared, "I’m deeply saddened by this news. He was a friend and, for a short time, bandmate in Shock Opera. An amazing and intuitive artist. Peace to his family." Emily Hay simply stated, "Rest in Peace, Billy Swann. Your music lives on!"
