Renowned Guyanese Cultural Icon Dave Martins Passes Away at 90, Leaves Behind a Legacy of National Pride and Music

Dave Martins, a beloved Guyanese and Caribbean icon, passed away on Sunday at the age of 90. Martins, best known for his influential music, including the timeless hit "Not a Blade of Grass," was a significant figure in affirming Guyana’s territorial integrity and fostering national pride.

Dave Martins was not only a singer but also a symbol of Guyanese unity. His work with the band The Tradewinds in the 1980s made him a household name. "Not a Blade of Grass," a song that rallied Guyanese people against Venezuela’s territorial claims in the Essequibo Region, has become widely regarded as Guyana’s unofficial national anthem. This song remains a powerful reminder of the country’s perseverance and solidarity.

In his later years, Martins struggled with dementia, a condition that gradually affected his health. Despite these challenges, he remained active, enjoying nature and engaging with visitors at his home in Oleander Gardens. His spirit of resilience continued to shine through until the end.

Martins is survived by his wife, Annette Arjoon-Martins, who shared her deep gratitude for the fifteen years they spent together. In a heartfelt post, she expressed her love and appreciation for their shared passions and the unconditional support they provided each other.

The passing of Dave Martins marks the end of an era for Guyanese culture, but his legacy will live on through his music, which continues to inspire and unite people across generations.
