Tom Doherty, a 67-year-old retired British physician from St Albans, has been missing in the French Pyrenees since Tuesday after sending a distress message to his family. The experienced hiker had embarked on a solo trek near Col d’Escots but has not been seen or heard from since his last communication, which alarmingly indicated he was in trouble.
Doherty’s final messages, sent via WhatsApp, revealed that he had fallen and was unable to move. The last image he shared with his family showed a mountainous landscape shrouded in ominous clouds, followed by a brief message, “bugger,” indicating that he might have encountered significant difficulties. His daughter, Rachel Doherty, expressed the family’s deep concern, noting they had urged him to descend immediately after receiving the troubling messages.
The search operation for Tom Doherty has become a major focus for both local authorities and international teams. Despite the extensive efforts, including the use of helicopters and search dogs, progress has been hindered by challenging weather conditions. Heavy fog has blanketed the area, severely limiting visibility and complicating the search in the rugged terrain of the Pyrenees.
Anne Doherty, Tom’s wife, shared with French broadcaster France Info that while her husband was an avid walker, he was not familiar with the Col d’Escots region and did not have all the necessary equipment for such a demanding hike. This lack of preparation is feared to have exacerbated the situation.
On social media, many expressed their concerns and hopes for Doherty’s safe return. Mick Shovlin commented, "Not again why oh why do these people risk walking alone abroad," while Helen Dyne added, "So sad I hope he’s found safe but I would advocate don’t hike alone for these reasons… always make safety the priority." Another user, Angela Mills, simply wrote, "Pray he’s found asap."
As the search continues, Tom Doherty’s family remains hopeful but deeply anxious. They are urging anyone who may have seen him or have information about his whereabouts to come forward. The global community is closely watching the situation, hoping for a positive outcome to this distressing situation.
