Riverside, NJ – The Riverside community is deeply saddened by the passing of Michael V. Kranz, a dedicated firefighter and beloved community member. Michael, aged 74, passed away peacefully at his home on August 21, 2024, after a valiant four-year battle with cancer.

Born and raised in Riverside, Michael’s life was marked by service and commitment to his community. He attended St. Peter’s Grammar School and Holy Cross High School before embarking on a long and impactful career in public service. Michael’s professional journey culminated in his role as the Superintendent of Roads and Bridges for Burlington County, a position he held until his retirement.

Michael’s dedication to his community extended beyond his professional life. For over fifty years, he served as a firefighter, a role in which he was deeply respected and admired. As a life member and past Chief of Riverside Fire Company No. 1, Station 701, Michael played a pivotal role in the safety and well-being of his community. His service also included roles as a past Burlington County Deputy Fire Coordinator and a member of the Burlington County Hazmat Team. Michael’s commitment to service took him as far as New Orleans, where he assisted with Hurricane Katrina rescue and relief efforts for one month.

Michael’s love for the outdoors was as passionate as his commitment to firefighting. He found great joy in camping, hiking, and sailing, especially at his residence on Long Beach Island, where he spent many happy times.

Michael is survived by his wife of 50 years, Kathleen Kranz, and his daughter Melanie Kranz. He was also a cherished bonus father to Kaelin Coughlin and a beloved bonus grandfather to Kadence Coughlin. His sister Valerie McQuaide, along with nieces Kelley and Stacy McQuaide, also mourn his loss. Michael’s extended family, including his sister-in-law Sharon Mascola and her children, and his close friends Fred Galdo and Salli Gordon, will deeply miss him.

The Riverside Fire Company No. 1 expressed their sorrow in a heartfelt Facebook post, describing Michael as a brother firefighter and a hero. Numerous tributes have poured in on social media, reflecting the impact Michael had on those who knew him.

Phil Saglembeni shared, "RIP sir, it was a pleasure serving with you in the Riverside Volunteer Fire Company."

Tom Cathers added, "RIP Chief. Thank you for the training and guidance you provided me when I was new to firefighting. See you at the big one."

Michael’s legacy of bravery, dedication, and love will continue to inspire the Riverside community and all who had the privilege of knowing him. Services for Michael will be private, honoring his wishes, and in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Riverside Fire Company No. 1.
