San Diego Police Officer Austin Machitar Killed, Zachary Martinez Critically Injured in Fiery Clairemont Crash After High-Speed Pursuit

San Diego, California – In a tragic turn of events, San Diego Police Officer Austin Machitar was killed, and his fellow officer, Zachary Martinez, remains in critical condition following a devastating multi-vehicle crash late Monday night in the Clairemont area. The incident occurred near the intersection of Doliva Drive and Clairemont Mesa Boulevard, just west of Interstate 805, around 11:30 p.m.

The crash happened after a high-speed pursuit that began when police attempted to stop a vehicle speeding along Clairemont Mesa Boulevard. The pursuit was initially called off by a supervisor due to the dangerous speeds involved. However, the fleeing suspect collided with the officers’ patrol car, resulting in a fiery crash that claimed the life of Officer Machitar and left Officer Martinez fighting for his life.

Chief Scott Wahl of the San Diego Police Department identified the critically injured officer as 27-year-old Zachary Martinez, who has been with the department for a year and a half. Martinez, a Navy reservist originally from Texas, was previously a trainee of Officer Machitar. The two occasionally patrolled together as partners.

Chief Wahl spoke highly of Martinez, stating, "He was born and raised to serve."

The tragic incident has prompted an outpouring of support and prayers from the community. Many have taken to social media to express their condolences and hopes for Martinez’s recovery.

Luz Arista commented, "So sad, He is very young I hope he is getting better soon."

Evelyn Snyder shared her prayers, saying, "I am praying ongoing for this gentleman and for the family and the family in blue."

Heather Bax sent "healing prayers from Texas," while Adriana Sitz offered "healing thoughts and prayers for his recovery."

Rick Gordon expressed his opinion on the situation, stating, "They called it off but they went after him anyways this is the officer’s fault."

Others, like Florence Evangelista, are praying for a speedy recovery for Officer Martinez, saying, "I’m praying for your speedy recovery Sir, get well soon, your family and friends need you, and the community too."

The community continues to rally around Officer Martinez and the San Diego Police Department during this difficult time. The department and the public alike hope for Martinez’s full recovery as they mourn the loss of Officer Machitar.
