Emery County, Utah – The search for Howard Stone, a 64-year-old experienced hiker from Utah, continues as rescue teams and family members work tirelessly to locate him in the rugged terrain of Little Wild Horse Canyon. Stone, last seen on Saturday, August 10, embarked on a solo hike in the narrow and challenging slot canyon near Goblin Valley State Park but has not been heard from since.
Stone’s vehicle was found parked at the trailhead of Little Wild Horse Canyon, a popular but dangerous hiking destination known for its stunning views and narrow pathways. When Stone did not return from his hike, his son reported him missing the following day, prompting an extensive search operation.
Emery County Sheriff Tyson Huntington is leading the search efforts, which include the Emery County Search and Rescue team, the Utah Department of Public Safety (DPS), and personnel from Goblin Valley State Park. The DPS has deployed helicopters equipped with advanced technology to assist in the aerial search, while ground teams have been navigating the challenging terrain using dirt bikes and ATVs.
Despite the intensive search, as of Tuesday, Howard Stone remains missing, and concerns for his safety are growing. The difficult landscape of the canyon, combined with the recent flash flood warning issued for the region, has complicated the search. This warning led to the closure of The Narrows and other slot canyons in nearby Zion National Park, underscoring the potential dangers that Stone may have encountered.
Family members and the local community have expressed their concerns and hopes on social media. Shane Stone, a relative, posted on Facebook, "This is my beloved uncle Howard Stone. Any help in getting this information out would be greatly appreciated." Another user, Bonnie Sharp, commented, "I shared this in my southern Utah hiking group. I’m so sorry, I really hope he’ll be found soon. That’s a long time to be missing but there’s still hope he’ll be found alright." Debbie Mathewson added, "This makes me so sad! Prayers for his family and searchers!"
Authorities are urging anyone with information about Howard Stone’s whereabouts to contact the Emery County Sheriff’s office. A $10,000 reward is being offered for any information leading to his discovery. As the search continues, the community remains hopeful for a positive outcome despite the challenging conditions.
