Dr. José Roberto Leonel Ferreira, a highly respected senior radiologist, tragically lost his life in a plane crash that occurred in São Paulo, Brazil, on August 9, 2024. The Voepass ATR 72 twin-engine plane, carrying 61 passengers, including eight doctors headed to an oncology conference, crashed, killing all on board.

Dr. Ferreira began his medical career after completing his radiology residency at the Hospital do Servidor Público in São Paulo. He furthered his education with a master’s degree in biomedical engineering from the Federal Technological University of Paraná. His passion for teaching led him to Unioeste, where he served as an assistant professor, mentoring and training future radiologists.
In 1994, Dr. Ferreira established the Dr. Leonel Ferreira Imaging Center in Cascavel, Paraná, which quickly became a leading facility in the region. The center, known for its advanced imaging technologies, serves approximately 30,000 patients annually, a testament to Dr. Ferreira’s commitment to providing top-quality healthcare.
