Pittsburgh, PA — Sheena Fitzgerald, 34, tragically lost her life in a devastating multi-vehicle crash that occurred early Monday morning on Route 28. The accident took place just after 7 a.m. and involved four vehicles, including the Dodge Challenger that Fitzgerald was driving.
According to Pennsylvania State Police, the incident began when Fitzgerald, driving southbound on Route 28 in a Dodge Challenger, attempted to overtake a Ford F-350. As she accelerated, she struck the rear bumper of the F-350, causing her to lose control of her vehicle. The Challenger veered off the road, crossed the center median, and entered the northbound lanes.
Once in the northbound lanes, the Challenger collided with a guardrail, which sent the vehicle airborne. The car then struck the hood and windshield of a Dodge Dart traveling in the opposite direction. The impact caused the Challenger to continue its trajectory, where it was subsequently hit by a Hyundai Kona driven by Jonathan Sands, who was also heading northbound.
Sheena Fitzgerald was pronounced dead at the scene due to the severe injuries she sustained. Emergency services responded quickly, but unfortunately, there was nothing they could do to save her. Jonathan Sands, the driver of the Hyundai Kona, suffered serious injuries and was transported to Allegheny General Hospital, where he is currently reported to be in stable condition.
The drivers of the Dodge Dart and Ford F-350 were not injured in the collision.
The Pennsylvania State Police are continuing their investigation into the crash, with initial reports suggesting that excessive speed was a significant factor. The investigation will determine if there were any additional contributing factors.
Emergency crews managed to clear the accident scene by approximately 11:30 a.m., allowing traffic to resume. This tragic event highlights the dangers of speeding and the importance of maintaining control of one’s vehicle. Authorities are urging anyone with further information regarding the crash to come forward to assist with the ongoing investigation.
