Shippensburg Mourns the Loss of Gloria J. Cassidy, Beloved Community Member and Devoted Mother

Shippensburg, PA – The Shippensburg community is mourning the loss of Gloria J. Cassidy, a cherished member of the town, who passed away on the morning of Thursday, August 15, 2024, at the age of 73. Gloria, who was born on July 21, 1951, in Chambersburg, was known for her dedication to her family, friends, and the community.

Gloria, the daughter of the late Melvin J. and Lillian B. (Helm) Rotz, spent her early years in Chambersburg before graduating from Shippensburg High School in 1969. She went on to work as an administrative assistant at the Army War College in Carlisle and later served as a school secretary at Mainsville and James Burd Elementary Schools. Even after her retirement, she continued to contribute to the community through her volunteer work at James Burd and S.A.M.S.

Gloria was known for her love of travel, often visiting Jamaica, Disney, and the beach with her family. She was also an avid reader and a member of the Burd Book Buddies. Her social gatherings, including lunches with her 1969 classmates and S.A.S.D. retirees, were a testament to her love for connecting with others. Above all, Gloria treasured her family, especially the Sunday dinners and holiday game nights that brought them together.

She is survived by her two daughters, Tonya Funk and her husband Charles, and Lori Rauber and her husband Michael, both of Shippensburg; her four grandchildren, Cassidy Funk, Aaron Rauber, Carter Funk, and Jacob Rauber; two brothers, Merle Rotz and his wife Mary of Carlisle, and Richard Rotz and his wife Kathy of Shippensburg; and her sister-in-law, Julie Cassidy of Newville.

The loss of Gloria has deeply affected those who knew her. Many have taken to social media to express their condolences. Linda Porter shared, "Sympathy to the family, a wonderful caring person." Bill Perry echoed similar sentiments, stating, "So sorry to hear. She was a very nice person. Sympathy to the family." Kathy Jo Reinsmith added, "Deepest condolences to the family. You are in our thoughts and prayers during this time of sorrow. She will be missed by many."

A funeral service for Gloria J. Cassidy will be held on Tuesday, August 20, 2024, at 3:00 p.m. at Grace United Church of Christ, with Rev. George W. Heckard officiating. Burial will follow in the Mongul Cemetery. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the church. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society in her memory.

Gloria’s passing leaves a void in the hearts of those who knew her, but her legacy of kindness, love, and community spirit will continue to inspire.
