Bossier City, Louisiana – A violent altercation at Bossier High School in Bossier City turned tragic on Monday night, August 19, 2024, when 43-year-old Anthony Hughes was shot during a confrontation with juveniles in the parking lot behind the school’s football stadium. The incident unfolded during a school Spirit Night event and has left the local community in shock.

According to Bossier Sheriff Julian Whittington and Bossier Schools Superintendent Jason Rowland, the situation escalated quickly when Hughes got into a fight with a juvenile who was a passenger in a car driven by 32-year-old Marcus Kelly. As the altercation intensified, Kelly exited his vehicle and shot Hughes once in the torso.

Following the shooting, both men fled the scene in their vehicles, leading to a dramatic car chase along Bearkat Drive. Hughes, despite his injury, rammed his vehicle into Kelly’s car, which had been stopped by deputies from the Bossier Parish Sheriff’s Office.

Both Hughes and Kelly were detained by law enforcement and transported to Ochsner’s LSU Medical Center for treatment. Kelly was later arrested and charged with attempted second-degree murder, illegal possession of a firearm by a felon, and possession of a firearm on a school campus. His bond has been set at $305,000. An arrest warrant for aggravated criminal property damage is pending for Hughes upon his release from the hospital.

The Bossier City community is now grappling with the aftermath of the violence that marred what was meant to be a celebratory evening. Authorities are continuing their investigation into the incident, as concerns over safety at school events grow.
