Sonoma County Community Mourns the Loss of Jessica Avila Munoz, Peace Officer Killed in Tragic DUI Crash

Santa Rosa, CA – The Sonoma County community is grieving the loss of 31-year-old Jessica Avila Munoz, a dedicated peace officer, who tragically lost her life in a fatal crash on Friday. Munoz was on her way to pick up her daughter when her vehicle was struck by a suspected drunk driver, identified as 68-year-old Nhan Van Nguyen, who has a history of DUI convictions.

The collision occurred around 1:35 p.m. when Munoz’s white Honda was turning left from Lombardi Court onto eastbound Sebastopol Road. Nguyen, driving a Dodge pickup truck, allegedly ran a red light, causing the devastating impact. The force of the collision sent Munoz’s vehicle into a third car, a Prius, whose driver escaped unharmed. Despite the efforts of first responders, Munoz was severely injured and later succumbed to her injuries at the hospital.

Nguyen, who was also taken to the hospital but was reportedly uninjured, was found to be under the influence of alcohol at the time of the crash. With four prior DUI convictions and a suspended license, Nguyen was arrested and booked into Sonoma County Jail on charges of gross vehicular manslaughter and felony DUI causing great bodily injury.

The incident has sparked outrage and calls for stricter penalties against habitual DUI offenders. Many in the community, including Munoz’s colleagues and friends, have expressed their grief and frustration on social media.

Terri Erickson shared her sorrow, stating, "So sad, and condolences to her family & friends." Another community member, Denise Stanton Vincent, echoed the sentiment, saying, "Suspended license is not enough for 4 DUIs!! So sad for the officer and her family, hopefully prison for life now."

As the investigation continues, authorities are urging anyone with information to come forward. The tragic loss of Jessica Avila Munoz has left a profound impact on Santa Rosa, with the community rallying around her family during this heartbreaking time.
