St. Louis Mourns the Loss of Dan Harbaugh, Esteemed CEO of Ronald McDonald House Charities, Following Long Battle with Cancer

Dan Harbaugh, a beloved figure in St. Louis, Missouri, and the President and CEO of Ronald McDonald House Charities of St. Louis, passed away on August 12, 2024, following a courageous battle with cancer. Harbaugh, who led the organization for over 30 years, leaves behind a legacy of growth, compassion, and unwavering dedication to helping families in need.

Under Harbaugh’s leadership, Ronald McDonald House Charities of St. Louis expanded significantly. The organization grew from a single location to include three additional Ronald McDonald Houses, providing vital support to families of seriously ill children. Today, the charity operates two locations that serve 92 families each night, offering a "home away from home" during some of the most challenging times in their lives.

In addition to the expansion of the houses, Harbaugh was instrumental in the success of the Ronald McDonald Family Room program. This initiative, spread across four locations in partnership with three major hospitals, supports over 49,000 families annually, providing comfort and respite to those who need it most.

Beyond his professional achievements, Dan Harbaugh was known as a devoted husband, father, mentor, and friend. His passion for helping families in their most vulnerable moments was evident in every aspect of his work. His commitment to the mission of Ronald McDonald House Charities was a beacon of hope, providing solace and strength to countless individuals.

The community’s grief was palpable on social media. Saint Raphael the Archangel Parish and School expressed deep sorrow, noting Harbaugh’s significant impact on both the school and the broader South City community. They highlighted his enthusiasm for volunteering and his love for events like the parish picnic and basketball tournaments. “Dan left a big mark on our community and will be greatly missed,” the parish stated.

Marilyn Bogucki Scheipeter shared her condolences online, writing, "R.I.P. Condolences to the Harbaugh family." Sherry Hickman Heuing also expressed her sadness, remembering Dan’s joyful spirit, "Dan always had the biggest smile on his face and was a joy to be around." Michele Kratky simply stated, "RIP Dan, Wonderful caring man," while Marsha Bogucki-Watkins extended her sympathy to the Harbaugh family.

A funeral service in honor of Dan Harbaugh will be held at St. Raphael on Friday, August 16, at 10:00 a.m. The St. Louis community is encouraged to keep the Harbaugh family in their thoughts and prayers during this difficult time. Dan’s legacy will continue to guide Ronald McDonald House Charities of St. Louis, ensuring that his vision of a compassionate and supportive community lives on.
