Sylmar High School Lockdown Following Weapon Threat – Principal Rodney Wright Addresses Parents Amidst Tense Situation

Sylmar, Los Angeles – Sylmar High School, located in the San Fernando Valley, was placed on lockdown Friday morning, August 16, 2024, after a weapon threat was reported on campus. The lockdown was initiated at 10:15 a.m. following what was described as a “disturbance on campus,” according to a statement from the Los Angeles Unified School District.

Principal Rodney Wright promptly sent a letter to parents, informing them of the lockdown and reassuring them that the school would remain closed until law enforcement deemed it safe to reopen. The incident, which escalated into a confrontation in one of the school’s hallways, has raised significant concerns about student safety.

Cell phone footage from the scene captured a chaotic altercation involving multiple individuals shoving and throwing punches, with adults on campus intervening in an attempt to break up the fight. The Los Angeles City Fire Department responded to an assault call at around 11 a.m. on Borden Avenue, near the school. One individual was transported to the hospital, though details about the injuries have not been disclosed.

Los Angeles Police officers quickly responded to the situation and took a student into custody who was found in possession of a weapon. Principal Wright confirmed the student’s apprehension and emphasized that the situation is under close monitoring by authorities. The lockdown will remain in effect until the “all-clear” is given, ensuring the safety of all students and staff on campus.
