William J. McAvoy, a beloved resident of Syracuse, New York, has passed away at the age of 91 following a long battle with illness. William, known for his deep ties to the community and his active participation in St. Patrick’s Church, died peacefully at his home early this morning at 12:30 a.m.
William is survived by his loving wife, Mrs. Elizabeth M. McAvoy, with whom he shared a long and enduring marriage. Together, they raised a close-knit family, which includes two daughters, Mrs. Leo E. Lake of Binghamton and Mrs. Harry F. Smith of Syracuse, as well as three sons, James J. McAvoy of Johnson City, and William A. and Bruce E. McAvoy, both of Binghamton. His legacy also lives on through his 12 grandchildren and 33 great-grandchildren, all of whom were deeply cherished by him.
In addition to his immediate family, William J. McAvoy leaves behind his nephew, Edward McAvoy of Binghamton, and several cousins who held him in high regard. His strong family bonds were a testament to his character, which was further reflected in his commitment to his church and community.
The McAvoy family is receiving friends and community members at the Walter D. Sullivan & Son Funeral Home on Oak Street. Visiting hours are scheduled for today from 7 to 9 p.m., as well as Friday from 2 to 5 p.m. and again from 7 to 9 p.m. These gatherings will offer an opportunity for those who knew and respected William to pay their last respects and honor his memory.
As the Syracuse community comes together to mourn the loss of William J. McAvoy, his family is comforted by the outpouring of support and the many tributes being paid in his honor. His passing leaves a significant void, but his contributions to his family and his community will be remembered and cherished by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
