Thelma Tague Passes Away at 96 in Ontario, CA, Just Hours Before Husband Gyle’s 100th Birthday

Thelma Tague, a cherished resident of Ontario, California, passed away peacefully on August 2, 2024, at the age of 96. Thelma, a beloved teacher and community member, leaves behind a legacy of love, dedication, and resilience. Her passing marks the end of a life filled with passion for education and deep commitment to her community.

Born on February 21, 1928, Thelma grew up in Ontario, where she lived a vibrant childhood, attending local schools and engaging in various activities such as tennis and swimming. She graduated from Chaffey High School in 1945 and later earned degrees from Redlands University and the University of La Verne, which paved the way for her remarkable 50-year teaching career. Thelma was especially known for her creative approach to teaching at Hawthorne Elementary School, where she was honored as the Ontario-Montclair School District’s Teacher of the Year.

Thelma’s dedication extended beyond her professional life. She was an avid animal lover and remained active in community organizations like PEO, DKG, and Ontario First Baptist Church. Her life was a testament to her love for teaching, animals, and her community.

Tragically, Thelma’s beloved husband, Gyle Tague, passed away just hours before his 100th birthday on the morning of August 2, 2024. The couple, who celebrated 75 years of marriage, are remembered fondly by their community, with many expressing their condolences on social media.

Norma McKibben Grider reflected on their lives, stating, “A wonderful person, a great teacher, and a very dear friend, Thelma Tague has passed away at the age of 96… They are now together again and probably playing cards or some other game while singing together as Thelma plays the heavenly piano.”

JoAnn Fickel Juniper Potts added, “How sad for the family that her husband has passed now also. Prayers for everyone,” while Jerilynne Johnson remembered, “She exuded JOY… Thelma… thank you for gracing our world with you.”

Thelma is survived by her children, Gayle Young of Tampa Bay, Florida, and Eric Tague of Carlsbad, California, as well as eight grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren. Her life and legacy will continue to inspire all who knew her.

The family has requested that memorial donations be made to local Humane Society chapters or the Special Olympics in honor of Thelma and her lifelong dedication to others.
