Tom McCutcheon, Former Kent County Deputy and School Resource Officer, Remembered Fondly by Grand Rapids Community

Tom McCutcheon, known affectionately as "Cutch," passed away on Thursday, August 22, 2024, leaving a deep void in the Grand Rapids, Michigan community. McCutcheon, a former Kent County Sheriff’s Deputy, was well-regarded for his impactful work as a School Resource Officer at Cedar Springs Public Schools and later as a Positive Behavior Intervention Specialist at Comstock Park High School.

McCutcheon dedicated his career to positively influencing the lives of students, a mission he articulated passionately. "One of the things I think about in law enforcement is if you can help somebody in your career—change somebody’s life—the best place to do that is with students. If you can touch a kid’s life, you can change the kid’s life for the rest of their life," McCutcheon once remarked. His approach and dedication earned him the title of Employee of the Quarter in 2017, a testament to his significant contributions to the community.

The news of McCutcheon’s passing has sparked an outpouring of grief and memories from those who knew him. His daughter, Amber McCutcheon, expressed the family’s sorrow on social media, stating, "It breaks our… Our dad Thomas McCutcheon has passed away today 8/22 @3:50p. He was loved by so many and we appreciate everyone who has reached out." She noted the family’s gratitude for the community’s support and shared that preparations are being made for people to pay their respects.

Many have taken to social media to remember McCutcheon. David Hood, reflecting on McCutcheon’s community involvement, shared, "The last couple of years I’ve been able to better know Tom McCutcheon ‘Cutch’ and have become such a huge fan for his love for our kids and community! Rest In Peace Sir!" Samantha Rogalski added, "The way he reached every student in their own way was amazing. Such an incredible man, that has left an incredible legacy."

McCutcheon’s ability to connect with people and his unwavering commitment to making a difference have left an indelible mark on those who crossed his path. As the community mourns, many remember him not only as a public servant but as a man whose kindness and dedication touched countless lives.
