Cullman County, Alabama – Mirra Bride Dot Popee Chafin, a 21-year-old woman from Vinemont, lost her life in a tragic two-vehicle crash on Interstate 65. The accident occurred around 6:30 p.m. on Saturday, August 24, 2024, approximately seven miles south of Dodge City.
According to the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA), Chafin was driving a 2007 Ford Mustang when the vehicle veered off the roadway, struck a ditch, and overturned. Both Chafin and her passenger, 23-year-old Lara A. Phillips from Cullman, were ejected from the car, as neither was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash. Tragically, Chafin was pronounced dead at the scene, while Phillips sustained injuries and was airlifted to UAB Hospital in Birmingham for medical treatment.
The Mustang, after the initial crash, entered the oncoming traffic lane and was struck by a 2014 Toyota Sienna driven by Suzanne E. Woods, a 56-year-old from Hayden. Woods also suffered injuries and was transported to UAB Hospital.
The crash site, located near the 293 mile marker on I-65, has prompted ongoing investigations by ALEA’s Highway Patrol Division. No further details have been released at this time.
The community has responded with an outpouring of prayers and support on social media. Betty Steiner shared, "Prayers for the families involved," while Amanda May Myers commented, "That stretch of interstate is awful and there’s always wrecks. Praying for these families."
Other expressions of support included Sandra Brown’s simple, heartfelt "Prayers!" and Janice Lamb’s detailed account, "We were 15 cars back and could see people pulling over on the opposite side of the highway running over to help. My prayers go out to all involved and their loved ones."
