Tragic Accident Near Peoria Claims Life of Kyle L. Jepson, Mapleton Resident

Peoria County, IL – The Peoria County community is mourning the untimely death of 31-year-old Kyle L. Jepson, a resident of Mapleton, Illinois. Jepson was tragically found deceased in his vehicle after it was discovered overturned in a wooded area off Smithville Road on Tuesday, August 13th, 2024.

The Peoria County Coroner, Jamie Harwood, confirmed Jepson’s identity and announced that he was pronounced dead at 12:44 p.m. The fatal accident was reported after property owners in the area noticed a damaged culvert and discovered Jepson’s vehicle at least 40 yards into the woods. Deputies from the Peoria County Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene and had to cut through dense brush to reach the wreckage.

Sheriff Chris Watkins provided further insight, stating that the accident likely occurred on Monday night, as nearby residents reported hearing the sound of a tree falling around 9 p.m. The cause of the crash remains under investigation, with speed suspected to be a contributing factor. Toxicology results are pending as part of the ongoing investigation.

The tragic loss of Kyle L. Jepson has left a significant void in the Mapleton community. Friends, family, and community members are grappling with the sudden and tragic nature of his passing.

Melissa Lindsey, a friend of Jepson, shared her grief on Facebook, writing, "Kyle was a kind soul taken too soon. We will miss you dearly, my friend." The community continues to express their condolences and support for Jepson’s family during this difficult time.

As the investigation continues, the Peoria County Sheriff’s Office and the Coroner’s Office are working to provide answers to the community, who are deeply saddened by the loss of a young life in such a tragic manner.
