Tragic Car Accident Claims Life of 19-Year-Old Gray Cassidy in Lafayette County, Mississippi

Oxford, Mississippi – The community of Oxford is mourning the loss of 19-year-old Gray Cassidy, who tragically died in a car accident on Sunday, August 18, 2024. The Lafayette County Sheriff’s Office is currently investigating the accident, which occurred on the 500 Block of County Road 103.

The accident was reported at 11:39 a.m. when the Lafayette County 911 Dispatch received a call about a vehicle upside down in a pond on private property. Emergency units from the Lafayette County Sheriff’s Office, Lafayette County Fire Department, Oxford Fire, and Baptist Ambulance Service rushed to the scene. Upon arrival, they determined that the accident likely occurred overnight. The vehicle was successfully recovered from the pond by the Lafayette County Fire Department and Shivers Towing Service. Sadly, Gray Cassidy was pronounced deceased at the scene by Lafayette County Coroner Glenn Coleman.

Sheriff Joey East expressed his condolences, stating, "This is a heartbreaking situation for our community. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and friends of Gray Cassidy during this difficult time."

Gray, who was born on August 31, 2004, in Benton, Arkansas, was a bright young man who graduated early from Oxford High School. He was pursuing a degree in Agricultural Science at Mississippi State University, where he was a member of the Kappa Sigma Fraternity. Despite his college commitments, Gray maintained close friendships with members of Sigma Chi and was well-loved by those who knew him.

The news of Gray’s passing has sent waves of sorrow through the community. On Facebook, numerous friends and acquaintances shared their memories and offered their condolences. "Thinking of my young friend Gray Cassidy and his family today. He was growing into a fine young man," posted Florida Boy Adventures, reflecting on their time fishing together. Eric Sheridan, another friend, reminisced, "I’ll never forget him catching that seagull."

The cause of the accident is still under investigation by the Lafayette County Sheriff’s Office, and further details have not yet been released.

As the Oxford community grieves, many are rallying to support Gray’s family during this incredibly difficult time. The loss of such a promising young life has left a significant void, and the community is united in offering their thoughts and prayers to Gray’s loved ones.
