Derrimut, Victoria – The community of Derrimut is in shock following the tragic death of 28-year-old Kioyom Athum, who was fatally stabbed in Balmoral Park early Saturday morning. Athum was found unconscious around 4:20 a.m. by a bystander who immediately contacted emergency services. Despite efforts by both bystanders and emergency personnel, Athum was pronounced dead at the scene.
Athum, a dedicated young basketball player, was last seen with four men in the area earlier that evening. Police have cordoned off the park and nearby homes as they conduct an intensive investigation, which includes forensic analysis of several knives found at the scene. Homicide Squad Detective Inspector Dean Thomas indicated that initial examinations suggest stab wounds, but further confirmation is awaited from a post-mortem examination.
As authorities continue their investigation, there is no current evidence linking Athum to any gangs. However, the police are appealing to anyone who was present at the park or nearby during the incident to come forward with any information.
The tragic death has sparked a wave of emotions on social media. Jason Wood MP commented, "Another senseless murder of another young talented man. My thoughts and prayers go out to his family and friends."
Other community members have also expressed their grief and frustration. Suzanne Hines wrote, "RIP young man, another senseless death. When is the government going to wake up and do something?" Connie Silva Balakrishnan added, "A growing problem in every state and Territory, judicial system is too weak in Australia."
Ross Parker raised concerns about broader issues, commenting, "Why does this happen everywhere African migration into the West occurs? The UK, Europe, and here? An open honest conversation needs to be had to address this, or it will keep happening."
The community is urged to assist the investigation by contacting Crime Stoppers with any relevant information. Athum’s family visited Balmoral Park on Saturday to mourn their loss, as the investigation into his untimely death continues.
