Tragic Drowning of Austin James Berger at Marl Lake in Fenton Township, Michigan, Leaves Community in Mourning

Fenton Township, Michigan – The Genesee County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the tragic drowning of Austin James Berger, whose body was discovered in Marl Lake on Monday, August 12, 2024. The incident follows a search initiated after Berger was reported missing on June 25, 2024.

Austin, a 33-year-old resident of Fenton Township, was last seen on June 23, walking along familiar routes in the area, including Owen Road, Downtown Fenton, and Silver Lake Parkway. Described as a vulnerable person, his disappearance had prompted a community-wide effort to locate him.

Early Monday morning, a heavy police presence was noted on West Thompson Road in Fenton Township as authorities responded to a report of a person struggling in the waters of Lake Fenton. Sadly, Austin’s body was later found in Marl Lake, confirming fears of an accidental drowning.

The Genesee County Sheriff’s Office has indicated that the investigation is still in its early stages, but there is no evidence of foul play. The discovery has left the community heartbroken, and the Sheriff’s Office extended its condolences to Austin’s friends and family.

Residents and local authorities had been hopeful for a different outcome after spreading alerts and tips across the region. However, the tragic loss of Austin James Berger has reminded the community of the dangers that can occur even in familiar surroundings.
