Keith Bychinski, an Earlham, Iowa resident, tragically lost his life in a drowning accident while attempting to assist two young boys in Waukee on August 8, 2024. Keith, 31, has been hailed as a hero after he died trying to retrieve fishing gear from a retention pond for the children.
The incident occurred around 3:30 p.m. when the Waukee Fire Department responded to an emergency call on the 2500 block of Grand Prairie Parkway. According to reports, the boys had lost their fishing pole in the pond, and Keith, who had been nearby, jumped in to help. Sadly, he struggled in the water and was later found unconscious by authorities.
Keith’s passing has left his family and community in deep mourning. His aunt, Sarah Bychinski, shared on Facebook, “Thank you for all the kind words in the loss of our family member…my nephew Keith Bychinski. He died a hero, trying to retrieve some fishing gear from a retention pond for some young boys. We are all heartbroken, devastated, and in total shock. Words cannot describe what we or his mother and sister are going through right now.”
The Beyreis and Bychinski families have set up a GoFundMe page to help Keith’s mother, Wendy, with the financial burdens she now faces. Wendy, who graduated from Spencer High School, has a strong connection to the Spencer area, where many friends and family reside.
The loss of Keith is compounded by the fact that his father, Matthew Bychinski, also passed away recently in October 2023. The community has rallied around the family, offering condolences and support during this difficult time. Shirley A Vollert expressed her sympathy, saying, "My deepest sympathy for your loss Sarah! Hugs!" while Michelle Jean Otto added, "I’m so sorry for your loss Sarah Bychinski. Sending lots of love and prayers!"
Keith will be remembered as a kind-hearted and selfless individual who always put others first. His tragic death has underscored the profound impact he had on those around him, and his heroic act will not be forgotten. The community continues to support the Bychinski family as they navigate this heartbreaking loss.
