Menlo Park, California – The Menlo Park community is mourning the tragic loss of Dylan Scirpo, a 17-year-old junior at Menlo-Atherton High School, who died in a train accident on Sunday, August 11, 2024. Dylan, a talented athlete and valued member of the Menlo-Atherton Varsity Boys Water Polo team, was struck by a southbound train near the Encinal Avenue crossing around 9 p.m. The San Mateo County Coroner’s Office confirmed his identity shortly after the incident.
Dylan was known for his dedication both on and off the field, admired by his peers for his sportsmanship and commitment. His sudden death has left his school and community in deep shock and sorrow.
The accident occurred just as Caltrain’s new electric trains began regular service, with the train that struck Dylan being one of the first to operate on these lines. The crossing remained closed for several hours while authorities investigated the scene, reopening by Monday morning.
