Tragic Loss of Firefighter Thomas Wilson Berry III in Delaware – Community Mourns a Dedicated Public Servant

Georgetown, Delaware – Thomas Wilson Berry III, a 23-year-old volunteer firefighter and dedicated public servant, tragically lost his life on August 13, 2024, while responding to a crash on Route 9 (Lewes-Georgetown Highway). Berry, who was affiliated with both the Georgetown and Ellendale fire companies, was also employed by Sussex County Emergency Medical Services as a logistics technician since 2022.

The incident occurred at approximately 4:30 PM as Berry was returning to the County headquarters after completing a field assignment. County Council President Michael H. Vincent expressed profound sorrow over the loss of Berry, stating, "We are beyond heartbroken at this loss of such a dedicated and caring young man who exemplified public service until his last moments on this earth." Vincent emphasized that Berry’s bravery and selflessness will be remembered and admired by his friends, colleagues, and the entire county.

In the wake of this tragic event, the Delaware State Police have launched an active investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash and Berry’s death. As a result, the Lewes-Georgetown Highway remained closed late into the evening on August 13. Berry’s body was respectfully transported to the Delaware Medical Examiner’s Office, accompanied by a procession of public safety personnel. The county flags have been lowered to half-mast in his honor.

Support for Berry’s colleagues has been arranged, with grief counselors being made available to those affected by his sudden passing. The Delaware Medical Examiner’s Office will determine the cause of death as the investigation continues.
