Trine University and Steuben County Mourn the Loss of Philanthropist and Community Leader Ralph Trine

Angola, Indiana – The Trine University community and the broader Steuben County region are mourning the passing of Ralph Trine, a highly respected philanthropist and business leader, who died on August 14, 2024, at the age of 82 following a prolonged illness. Ralph Trine’s legacy is deeply embedded in the fabric of the community, particularly through his transformative contributions to education, local development, and charitable endeavors.

A 1961 alumnus of what was then Tri-State University, Ralph Trine, alongside his wife Sheri, played a pivotal role in the institution’s growth and success. Their significant donations led to the renaming of the university as Trine University in 2008. Ralph’s influence extended beyond the university, with his leadership in expanding Vestil Manufacturing from Albion, Michigan, to Angola, Indiana, creating jobs and fostering economic growth in the region.

Ralph and Sheri Trine were also known for their extensive philanthropy, including their contributions to the Community Humane Shelter of Steuben County, the Steuben County Community Foundation, and many other local initiatives. The Community Humane Shelter of Steuben County expressed their sorrow in a Facebook post, stating, "The team at our community humane shelter are saddened to learn of the passing of Ralph Trine. His work and generosity were paramount in achieving our goals to serve the animals in our community."

Rhonda Hanson, a community member, reflected on Ralph’s impact, posting, "Ralph and Sherri were so instrumental in the new Humane Shelter we have today. Ralph loved the kittys." Another resident, Rita Jo, shared her condolences, saying, "My heart goes out to the family."

Ralph Trine is survived by his wife Sheri, their children Barry and Carri, and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren. His passing marks the loss of a quiet leader whose impact on Trine University and the entire Steuben County community will be felt for years to come.
