Tucson Community Mourns the Loss of Zahriya Moreno Amid Domestic Violence Tragedy and Organ Donation Honor Walk

Tucson, AZ – The Tucson community is in deep mourning following the tragic death of Zahriya Moreno, a vibrant young woman who lost her life to domestic violence. Zahriya’s passing has left her family, particularly her father Robert Moreno, and friends in unimaginable grief, as they grapple with the loss of a beloved daughter and a cherished community member.

Zahriya’s death is especially heartbreaking for the Moreno family, as it comes just two years after the loss of her twin brother, Izac Moreno, in a motorcycle accident. The two siblings shared a close bond that only twins can understand, making this second tragedy an unbearable blow to their family.

Zahriya was known for her lively and kind-hearted spirit, always bringing joy and warmth to those around her. She was deeply connected to her community in Tucson, where she was admired for her generosity and positivity. Friends describe her as someone who could light up a room with her presence, and she was always willing to help others in need.

The horrific incident that led to Zahriya’s untimely death occurred at the hands of Angelito Adrian Olivas, who has since been arrested and charged with her murder. Zahriya’s life was cruelly taken by someone she once trusted, underscoring the urgent need for greater awareness and intervention in cases of domestic violence.

In the wake of this tragedy, the Tucson community has rallied around the Moreno family. On Wednesday, August 14, 2024, Zahriya was honored in a solemn ceremony known as the Honor Walk at Banner University Medical Center. This ceremony, which took place at 1:12 pm—a time that poignantly matched her late brother Izac’s favorite number—was a deeply emotional moment for those present. Her father, Robert Moreno, a firefighter, removed his hat and gave his daughter a long, slow salute before embracing her one last time.

Dan Marries, a local news anchor, shared his experience of attending the Honor Walk at the personal invitation of the Moreno family. "There wasn’t a dry eye in the hallway, with most sobbing and praying," Marries recounted. The ceremony was followed by the raising of the Donate Life flag, symbolizing Zahriya’s selfless act of organ donation, which will go on to save the lives of others.

The community’s outpouring of support has been evident on social media, where many have expressed their condolences and shared their grief. Jasmine Legaspi wrote, "This is so so sad. Her heart pulse changing at that very moment is so powerful and bittersweet. Sending her family so much love." Jennifer Lynn Contreras echoed these sentiments, saying, "My heart breaks with this family. I hope they can feel the community wrapping their arms around them in this very difficult time."

The loss of Zahriya Moreno is a stark reminder of the dangers of domestic violence and the devastating impact it can have on individuals and families. The Moreno family, having already endured the loss of one child, now faces the unimaginable task of grieving for another. The Tucson community continues to stand by them, offering support and prayers as they navigate this difficult time.
