Waco, Texas – The Waco Police Department has announced with deep sorrow the passing of Officer Jesus "Jesse" Cano, a dedicated public servant whose life was marked by an unwavering commitment to his community. Officer Cano, known affectionately as "Jesse," passed away on August 27, 2024, leaving behind a legacy of service, bravery, and compassion.
Born and raised in Waco, Jesus Cano graduated from Waco High School and later earned a Bachelor of Arts in History from the University of Texas at Austin. His passion for service led him to join the Texas National Guard, where he served with distinction. Cano was deployed twice to Egypt, in 2015 and 2018, where he served in South and North Sinai. His military service was recognized with numerous honors, reflecting his valor and dedication.
In November 2016, after his military service, Jesse Cano returned to Waco, where he was commissioned as a police officer. He was assigned to patrol North Waco, the very neighborhood where he grew up. His dedication to protecting his community and mentoring its youth made him a beloved figure both on and off duty. His relentless pursuit of justice and deep compassion for crime victims earned him respect and admiration from his colleagues and the community.
In recognition of his outstanding service, Officer Cano received the Certificate of Civic Achievement in 2019 and was nominated for Officer of the Year in 2022. He had recently completed the civil service promotional process and was on the verge of being promoted to Sergeant at the time of his untimely passing.
The news of his death has prompted an outpouring of grief and support from the community. Several individuals have taken to social media to express their condolences and gratitude for Jesse’s service.

The 100 Club Heart of Texas is currently collecting donations to support Jesse’s surviving spouse, Tammika Cano, during this incredibly difficult time. "Supporting our first responders and their families is our purpose; it is who we are and what we do," said Link Harris, 100 Club Board President. "We want Tammika to know she is embraced by our club and the community."
