Watervliet, Michigan – The Watervliet High School community is deeply saddened by the unexpected passing of student Dwayne Tillman on August 4, 2024. Dwayne, known for his infectious smile and warm demeanor, was a beloved member of the school, and his absence will be profoundly felt by all who had the privilege of knowing him.

Dwayne was not only a brilliant student but also a remarkable individual who brought joy and kindness to everyone around him. His ability to connect with others and his positive influence resonated throughout the school halls, leaving a lasting impact on his teachers, classmates, and staff members.

To support those affected by this tragic loss, Watervliet High School has arranged for counseling services to be available to students, staff, and the community. Counselors will be present in the school’s media center on Monday and Tuesday of this week from 12 PM to 4 PM. Anyone seeking support is encouraged to enter through the front doors of the building. For those unable to visit in person, Ms. Powers is available via email at cpowers@watervlietps.org to connect individuals with the necessary resources.

The news of Dwayne’s passing has sparked an outpouring of grief and remembrance on social media. Tracy Cowsert offered "prayers to the family," while Anthony Freemyer recalled Dwayne as "a funny, chilled, and very good friend." Michelle Coeling described Dwayne as "one of the most charismatic students I have ever had," and shared that their lunchtime talks about music and dreams would be treasured memories. Cameron Huff reminisced about their elementary school days, noting Dwayne’s bright smile and unique talent for doing backflips across the gym.
