WWE Hall of Famer Afa Anoa’i, Last of the Wild Samoans, Passes Away at 81 in Florida

Afa Anoa’i, the last surviving member of the iconic wrestling duo “The Wild Samoans,” has passed away at the age of 81. His death marks the end of an era for both his family and the professional wrestling community.

Afa Anoa’i, alongside his brother Sika Anoa’i, who passed away just two months earlier, was an influential figure in the world of professional wrestling. Together, they formed The Wild Samoans, a tag team that dominated the World Wrestling Federation (WWF) in the 1970s and 1980s, capturing the World Tag Team Championships three times. Their fierce in-ring personas and formidable skills made them legends in the sport.

Afa Anoa’i had been battling severe health issues since late 2023, including multiple heart attacks, a shattered back, and a struggle with pneumonia. Despite undergoing numerous surgeries, his health continued to deteriorate, leading to his passing on August 16, 2024, in Florida.

Born in American Samoa, Afa Anoa’i began his wrestling career after serving in the Marine Corps. His partnership with his brother Sika quickly gained traction, and The Wild Samoans became a cornerstone of professional wrestling. In recognition of their contributions, Afa and Sika were inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame in 2007 and the Professional Wrestling Hall of Fame in 2012.

After retiring from active competition, Afa dedicated his life to training the next generation of wrestlers. His trainees include some of wrestling’s biggest names, such as Hulk Hogan, Roman Reigns, and The Usos, who all credit Afa for his guidance and mentorship.

The Anoa’i family, widely regarded as wrestling royalty, has received an outpouring of condolences from fans and fellow wrestlers alike. Many have taken to social media to express their grief and honor Afa’s legacy.
