Zanele Mbokazi, Renowned Ukhozi FM Radio Host and Founder of Crown Gospel Music Awards, Passes Away in Durban Hospital

Zanele Mbokazi, a celebrated figure in South Africa’s gospel music industry and a beloved Ukhozi FM radio personality, passed away on August 12, 2024, at Parklands Hospital in Durban. The Nkambule and Mbokazi families have confirmed her passing, marking the end of a life dedicated to promoting gospel music and connecting with the community through her work on radio and television.

Born on November 7, 1971, in Durban, KwaZulu-Natal, Zanele’s upbringing played a crucial role in shaping her future endeavors. She pursued her education with vigor, graduating from St. Francis College at Marianhill High School and later earning multiple degrees, including a BA in English and Politics from the University of Natal and a BA Honours in Communications and Media. Zanele also completed a Diploma in Public Relations from Damelin, which equipped her with the skills needed to excel in the media industry.

Zanele’s career in broadcasting began in the early 1990s with her television debut on the reality show “Livewire” on NNTV. Her career took a significant turn in 1995 when she joined Ukhozi FM, one of South Africa’s largest radio stations, where she became a trusted voice for gospel music enthusiasts. Her passion for gospel music extended beyond radio as she became a prominent presenter on SABC1’s gospel music show “Ihora Lokudumisa” in 1997.

In 1999, Zanele founded Mirror PR and Events, through which she launched the Crown Gospel Music Awards. This annual event became a cornerstone of the gospel music industry in South Africa, providing a platform for artists to showcase their talents and celebrating the achievements of both established and emerging gospel musicians.

The news of Zanele Mbokazi’s passing has led to an outpouring of grief on social media, with many expressing their condolences and sharing memories of her impact. Hlengiwe Zulu posted, “So sad may she rest in peace,” while Thulani Tn Nkomonde remarked, “She was young and still had a lot to give us, aphumule kahle.” Many others, including Sphindile Mgabhi and Nomzamo Mkhize, echoed these sentiments, wishing for her soul to rest in peace.

Zanele Mbokazi’s obituary will be released by her family, and her contributions to the gospel music industry will be remembered by all who were touched by her work. Her legacy as a broadcaster, event organizer, and promoter of gospel music will continue to inspire future generations.
